2700K is the yellowish white of an old incandescent bulb, 3000K a warm white with less yellow. Which room suits which, what the box says, and why we use 2700K.

For a bedroom, choose 2700K. It is a warm, yellowish white close to an old incandescent bulb; 3000K is a warm white with less yellow and orange, better suited to places where you need to see clearly than places where you want to wind down. Living rooms suit 2700K too. Every lamp from Đèn Hạ Chí uses a 2700K bulb, and when you replace one, look for “2700K” or the code “827” on the box.

## What the K means, in one sentence

K (kelvin) describes the colour of white light: the lower the number, the warmer and more yellow; the higher, the whiter and cooler. Shops in Vietnam tend to sell bulbs in three colours, labelled warm (vàng), neutral (trung tính) and white (trắng); one common Rạng Đông bulb, for example, comes in 3000K, 4000K and 6500K.

## How 2700K and 3000K differ to the eye

The bulb maker LEDVANCE describes 2700K as a warm, soft glow similar to traditional incandescent bulbs, creating a cosy, relaxing and intimate atmosphere, and 3000K as a balanced warm white with fewer yellow and orange tones than 2700K.

At the workshop, with two bulbs side by side under identical shades, this is what I see: a white lime-washed wall goes honey-coloured under 2700K and looks almost cream under 3000K. Skin looks pinker under 2700K. Wood looks darker and redder. Three hundred kelvin is not a big gap, but put the two in the same room and anyone can see it.

| Office, computer desk | 3000K | Enough light for reading and computer work | Use a separate desk lamp |

The bedroom is the clearest case. You switch the light on there in the evening, when you want to rest, not work. If your bedroom doubles as an evening office, keep 2700K by the bed and use a separate desk lamp for the desk.

## Why we use one colour for everything

Three reasons.

First, lamps in the same home never clash. A 2700K pendant over the dining table next to a 3000K hallway light shows two different whites on the same wall when you look from the living room.

Second, rattan, seagrass and dó paper all lean yellow-brown. 2700K light through them comes out honey-coloured. 3000K through the same shade is still warm, but loses the colour we chose those materials for.

Third, you can replace a bulb at any electrical shop without remembering which lamp takes what. Every lamp we make: E27 base (the standard large screw-in size), 2700K, 6 W, with a spare in the box.

Brightness, on the other hand, can change. At Nhà Chín Phòng, a nine-room homestay in Lâm Viên - Đà Lạt ward, the nine [Đông Chí](/en/collection/dong-chi) (Winter Solstice) bedside pendants take 4 W bulbs instead of 6 W, still 2700K, at no change in price. Guests can read, and when they lie down there’s no glare. Đông Chí has an open band of weave in the middle of the bell, so light escapes sideways at the eye level of someone sitting up, rather than straight down into the face of someone lying flat.

## Buying a replacement bulb in Vietnam: what to read on the box

Four things:

1. **Base: E27.** The large screw-in base, the most common size. Not E14 (the small screw-in).
2. **Colour temperature: 2700K.** Many boxes only say “ánh sáng vàng” (warm light) or “warm white” with no number. That can mean 2700K or 3000K. Rạng Đông’s A60N3 7 W bulb, for example, comes in 3000K, 4000K and 6500K; its warmest version is 3000K, not 2700K. No K figure on the box, ask or pick another box.
3. **The three-digit code, if there is one.** Many brands print a code such as “827” next to the product name. The first digit is the colour rendering index, how faithfully colours look under the light (8 means 80 to 89); the last two are the colour temperature (27 means 2700K). The Philips CorePro “6-40W 827 E27”, for instance, is 6 W, as bright as a 40 W incandescent, 2700K, E27 base.
4. **Lumens.** Lumens tell you how much light the bulb gives; watts only tell you how much power it draws. The Rạng Đông bulb above is rated 560 lm at 7 W. Two bulbs with the same wattage can differ a lot in lumens.

If you want to dim the light, choose a bulb marked “dimmable”. We offer a dimmable 2700K bulb for VND 90,000 extra each, and a wall rotary dimmer at VND 350,000 per switch.

## Where people go wrong

- **Trusting “warm” on the box.** In a Vietnamese electrical shop, “vàng” may well be 3000K. Read the K figure.
- **Replacing one bulb in a set.** In a Tiểu Mãn (Grain Buds) set of three or a Xuân Phân (Spring Equinox) set of four, a single odd bulb stands out immediately. Replace like for like, or use the spare we send.
- **Choosing by watts.** One brand’s 6 W can be brighter than another’s 7 W. Read the lumens.
- **Mixing colours in one room.** 6500K downlights on with 2700K pendants make both look wrong. Put them on separate switches, or change the ceiling bulbs to a warm tone.
- **Buying E14 for an E27 lamp.** The small base won’t fit. Take the old bulb to the shop.

## How we do it at the workshop

Khang lights every lamp for 24 hours with the very 2700K bulb it will ship with, before packing. The spare in the box is the same make and colour.

On the light mock-up, I draw 2700K light onto a photo of your own room, so you can see how your walls, floor and furniture will take the colour before you order. The first version is free and arrives within 48 hours. [Send a room photo](/en/light-mock-up) to start, or [book a visit](/en/visit-the-workshop) to see the two colours side by side.
