Choosing lamps

A 2.6 m ceiling can take a pendant, if it hangs in the right place

Over a table, yes; over a walkway, no. Working out cable length for 2.6 and 2.7 m ceilings, and choosing a flat shade or a tall one.

The soft, blurred lattice shadow of a woven lamp shade cast across a wall in warm light

Yes, a 2.6 m ceiling can take a pendant, on one condition: nobody walks underneath it. Over a dining table, over a coffee table that sits out of the way, beside a bed: fine. In the middle of the living room, in a hallway, in front of a door: no. There the lamp has to clear people’s heads, and 2.6 m doesn’t leave enough room for a cable and a shade as well.

Most of the apartments we work on in Ho Chi Minh City have ceilings between 2.6 and 2.8 m. This note is the arithmetic for those ceilings, and part of our guide to choosing pendants for the living and dining room.

The sum for a 2.6 m ceiling

Start from the table, not the ceiling.

  1. A dining table is about 75 cm high (measure yours).
  2. The bottom of the lamp sits 75 cm above the tabletop, in the middle of the 70 to 80 cm range we use.
  3. So the bottom of the lamp is 75 + 75 = 150 cm above the floor.
  4. Under a 2.6 m ceiling, that leaves 260 − 150 = 110 cm from ceiling to lamp bottom.

Those 110 cm are shared by three things: the canopy (the cover that sits flat on the ceiling over the outlet), the cable, and the lamp body. The taller the lamp, the shorter the cable.

Ceiling Ceiling to lamp bottom Đông Chí, 48 cm tall Đông Chí, 36 cm tall
2.6 m 110 cm about 60 cm of cable about 70 cm of cable
2.7 m 120 cm about 70 cm of cable about 80 cm of cable

These figures subtract the lamp but not the canopy, so treat them as estimates. All four fit within the standard 1.5 m cable: Khang shortens it when he installs, and you pay nothing extra for cable.

Why not over a walkway

Bock Lighting, a US lighting maker, gives a minimum clearance of 7 feet (about 2.13 m) under fixtures over walkways. At the workshop we keep at least 2.1 m from floor to lamp bottom anywhere people walk.

Under a 2.6 m ceiling, 2.1 m of headroom leaves 50 cm for canopy, cable and shade together. Our Đông Chí (Winter Solstice) bell alone is 36 to 60 cm tall depending on size. It can be done, but the lamp ends up tight against the ceiling, no longer really a pendant, and a tall person still feels it hovering overhead. That spot suits a ceiling-mounted light better.

So under a low ceiling, the first question isn’t “which lamp” but “what is it hanging over”. If the answer is a table, a bed or a chair, everything here applies. If it’s a walkway, move the lamp.

Flat shade or tall shade

Low ceilings suit flat, wide shades better than tall ones, because of those 110 cm. A flatter shade like the Hạ Chí (Summer Solstice) takes up little height, and the rest is a thin cable the eye passes over. A 60 cm Đông Chí fills about half the gap and makes the room feel smaller.

If you love the bell shape, take the 36 cm Đông Chí at VND 2,100,000 (VND 2,400,000 less VND 300,000). By a bed, where nobody walks, it hangs at the eye level of someone sitting up against the headboard, and the open band in the weave lets light out sideways without glare when you lie down.

For Hạ Chí under 2.6 m over a small table, choose Ø35 cm (VND 2,600,000) rather than Ø45 cm. Our rule from the main guide holds: torn between two sizes under a low ceiling, take the smaller one.

Open rattan and a low ceiling

An observation from the workshop, not a measurement: an open rattan shade like Hạ Chí throws the pattern of the weave onto the ceiling, and the closer the ceiling, the sharper and brighter the pattern. In the low-ceilinged apartments we have fitted, a lit, patterned ceiling makes the room feel more open than a single pool on the table under a dark ceiling. A closed shade like Lập Thu (Start of Autumn) sends everything down and leaves the ceiling dark, which suits a reading corner more than a shared room.

That is why we tend to suggest open shades for low living rooms and closed shades where you need to see clearly. You don’t have to take our word for it: the light mock-up shows the light on the ceiling, so you can compare.

Example: the An Khánh apartment, 2.7 m ceiling

Khoa and Uyên’s apartment in An Khánh ward (old Thảo Điền, in former Thủ Đức City) has a 2.7 m ceiling, a living room and dining table in one space, and a ceiling outlet 60 cm off the table. We hung a Xuân Phân (Spring Equinox) set of four staggered pendants over the table from a VND 150,000 offset swag hook.

With a 2.7 m ceiling there is about 120 cm from ceiling to the lowest lamp. The other three hang progressively higher. The whole set sits over the table, and none of it is over the path between the sofa and the kitchen. The dining table part came to VND 9,950,000 and the whole order, including a dó paper Lập Thu in the bedroom, to VND 12,250,000 before VAT. Details are on the An Khánh apartment project page.

Where people go wrong

  • Hanging in the middle because the outlet is in the middle. Under a low ceiling this is the worst mistake: either the lamp is in the way or it gets pulled up against the ceiling. Move it over the table with a swag hook.
  • Choosing from photos taken in tall rooms. Product photos are usually shot under 3 m ceilings or higher. The same lamp under 2.6 m looks much bigger.
  • Hanging high over the table “to be safe”. The table already keeps people from walking there. Pulling the lamp up only puts the bulb in the eyes of whoever is seated.
  • Forgetting the canopy. It takes a few centimetres, and under a low ceiling those count when you work out the cable.

How we do it at the workshop

When you send photos, give us the ceiling height you measured with a tape, not the figure from the apartment brochure. Plasterboard ceilings, beams and service boxes can make the real height lower than the paperwork says.

For every request with a ceiling under 2.8 m, I check three things on the mock-up before sending it: is the lamp over a walkway, does the shade fill more than half the space between ceiling and table, and can someone seated see the bulb. The first version is free and arrives within 48 hours. In Ho Chi Minh City, Khang installs and sets the height on site, free once per order; for other provinces, see shipping and installation.

A low ceiling, an off-centre outlet, a living room that runs into the dining area: that is exactly when to send a room photo rather than work it out yourself. For measuring height over a dining table in more detail, read how high to hang a pendant over a dining table.
